On October 10, Olaine Youth Center “Popkorns” from 18:00 to 21:00, a citizens’ debate will be organized by the Civic Alliance - Latvia which is aimed at finding new ideas and approaches for social cohesion and helping to form the basis of the Cohesion Policy.
The Ministry of Culture has begun drafting policy planning documents, which will determine the policy of social cohesion in Latvia over the next seven years. The purpose of the debates is to ensure that these documents are drafted on the basis of the wishes of the citizens, involving citizens who represent the diversity of the public portrait, including those whose mother tongue is not Latvian, in the process.
“It is important that the debate process is partly organized by the experts in the field of social organisation and civil society who care about the quality of the documents being drafted and an inclusive process,” emphasizes Kristine Zonberga (Kristīne Zonberga), the director of the Civic Alliance - Latvia. The discussions will take place in all regions of Latvia in October and will be organized by regional NGO resource centers.
Civic Alliance - Latvia will organize debates in three cities of Riga region: October 10 – Olaine, Olaine Youth Center “Popkorns”, Veselības Street 7; October 17 – Kandava, Kandava Municipality Social Service, Jelgavas Street 4a, and October 24 – Riga, office of the Civic Alliance - Latvia, Alberta Street 13. The debate will be led by Dace Akule, who has many years of experience working in civil society organizations, including working on social cohesion matters. In 2012, following the referendum on the status of the Russian language in Latvia, she initiated and implemented the Citizens’ Debate on Integration. Dace has also led a working group on the development of a re-migration plan of the Ministry of Economics in order to make it easier for emigrated compatriots to return to Latvia.
The active citizens of Olaine Municipality are welcome to participate in the citizens’ debate on a cohesive society in order to jointly evaluate the current cohesion policy and to propose ideas for building a more cohesive society. Citizens are welcome to fill in the application form by October 7.
