2020.04.17

If you are left without means of subsistence while in Latvia, and your basic needs cannot be met otherwise, the social services of the local government where you have declared your place of residence may help you Please be ready to prove this fact by documents submitted to the social service.

Before you apply to the social service, please familiarise yourself with the issues and criteria for determining the eligibility:

  • If/how has the emergency situation changed your current life; what basic needs are not met?

State specifically: lack of money for food, payment for housing, for health care, medication, etc.

  • Are there minor children in the family, if so how many?
  • What was your profession, work place before the emergency situation was declared? How long did you work in this work place before the emergency situation?
  • Do you have savings, maintenance, disbursements from the State Social Insurance Agency, other state benefits?

Aid is accessible during the emergency situation and a month after its cancellation. Aid is available to persons staying in Latvia on temporary residence permit.  The cases of Erasmus programme students might not be examined by the social service. It depends on the support policy of the particular local government.
